San Diego in Fire

Just a quick update everybody, I was evacuated at about 5:30am this morning due to the wildfires here in San Diego. As of 10am PT, one fire is about 2 miles directly north of my apartment building and moving quickly south. Conditions are just now allowing aircraft in the area to fight the fires or at least maintain some kind of perimeter. I’m safely at work and have offers to stay at other employee’s homes if needed. They’ve asked us to stay off our cell phones, but you can call me at work 858-650-6042. I’ll call Dad thoughout the day just to check in. So everybody pray the winds change and move back northward!
Love you all!
Melissa

  1. Here’s another update. I spent the night at a friend’s house and still hope to be able to go home today. Governor Schwarzenneger just gave a press conference from the stip mall up the road from my place, so that looks good. And the freeway by my place has now been re-opened. We’re still at the mercy of the high winds for the next 24 hrs, so keep the prayers coming!!

  2. Hour 37 and counting and still no official word on whether my building survived or not. They’re telling us my area is still highly dangerous and no one can return until at least tomorrow afternoon. I’ll know more tomorrow. Quick statistic – 1 in 3 San Diegans have been evacuated (there are almost 3 million people in San Diego)

Anyway, another important note to those BYU fans, the BYU/SDSU game HAS BEEN CANCELED AND RESCHEDULED FOR DECEMBER 1ST.

  3. I saw that the winds let up today. Are you going to be able to go back to your apartment soon or do they still want to contain the fires more first?

  4. Hour 75 – we finally got word we can start going back to our homes. I found out yesterday morning my building sustained no actual fire damage, but may have significant smoke damage. I tried to get in last night but was turned back by the National Guard and the police on each road. I could see there wasn’t any visible damage to my building, but I still couldn’t get home. Speculation has it that President Bush is touring the area today so they wanted to keep the area secure. Not sure how I feel about that. What is more important, letting people go home or see if they have a home after three days or keeping it secure for the President? Sorry if I sound bitter, but it’s been increasingly frustrating as the officials continue to pat themselves on the back for all the hard work the firefighters and police are doing. Anyway, I’m hearing now they are letting people back in my neighborhood today with picture ID, proof of residence and a police escort. I’ll try to get back in later this afternoon. It’s a good thing I went to the DMV on Monday – I didn’t think to grab any mail on my way out the door early Monday morning and I don’t have any other proof of residence except for my temporary California ID. Thanks for all your prayers!
