Future WCC title game?

As we’re waiting for the tipoff of the Michigan game, anyone else think Gonzaga looked scary good last night? Moved the ball well (especially against the zone), ran the floor, monster night on the boards, shot lights-out, and on and on. All this made even more magnificent by comparing it to the lackluster, complacent, sloppy Cougs.

And Jimmer said he was happy with their play in the post-game press conference? I’ve only seen two games this year, and I wasn’t impressed with half of them.

Do any of you think the Cougs will get to wear their road blues in this tourney? If so, why; if not, why not? Discuss!

PS-any arguments based purely on loyalty will be politely disregarded.

  1. It’s true, it sounded like the ‘Zags played very well last night and like we didn’t do too hot. I think it will be a tough game but what gives me hope is that we haven’t really had two bad nights in a row. We usually rebound well the next game and shoot better. I’m hoping that Jackson’s shot shows up again because we need him to hit some big threes, especially against a team that could really pound us down low. I’m not too sure about the game tomorrow but I think if we show up and play like we have earlier in the season (Wyoming at home, the SDSU reg. season games) we’ve got a good shot at winning.

  2. Wait, what do you mean “sounded?” You didn’t watch? They don’t have CBS there?

That’s refreshing to hear that they don’t play two bad games in a row. Let’s hope for a vs. New Mexico after TCU effort tonight. (And then worry about not having a letdown game after that IF they win tonight.) I’m hoping to not see as many forced shots early in the shot clock tonight. And yes, it would be quite helpful if Emery unpacks his shot.

I’m worried about defense though. They’ll have to play zone because they don’t have the horses to go man, but Gonzaga moves the ball very well against the zone. Not so worried about the weakside wings closing out or stealing a skip pass, but the weakside bottom of the zone scares me. How alert are they? Will they rotate quick enough to defend post feeds off the skip? Do they have the foot quickness to contest a possible shot without getting beat on the dribble? I’m not so worried about Abuo’s side as much, but you can tell that Collinsworth is still a freshman sometimes.

Plus, theoretically, playing zone makes it where you’re in good rebounding position, but with no specific assignments you can have a lot of missed box outs. (Not that anyone is boxing out in this tournament anyway.) So the rebounding is a HUGE concern.

Gonzaga has size, but not necessarily scary athleticism. Sacre seemed weak with the ball the other night, but I think St. Johns had more muscle than BYU has. We’ll see how he does tonight.
