I Guess It wasn’t Destined to Be

CV Basketball update!

Well, the season is over for us but that its all right. Actually it’s not. Anyways we won our first game last Friday (the 16th or 17th or something) and then got into the quarterfinals and lost. Details are ensuing.

On Friday we played Thatcher in Boulder Creek at 7. A show down of epic proportions but not really. They didn’t look like much but we don’t either so that didn’t matter. I was pretty nervous. We started out well and stuff and we had them behind us for a good while. We were up by six or something at the half but in the second we let them get back in it. It was close and halfway through the 4th they took the lead. So now we were on the ropes but we were on the ropes a lot this year and we fought back, with Seth hitting two free throws with twenty seconds left to tie the game. Seth and I had four fouls so that was pretty scary but neither of us fouled out so that was good. They missed their attempt and we missed our shot with 1.6 seconds so we were going to overtime. We didn’t come out too good, air balling two shots and missing another, while they hit two lay ups. Beeler hit a 3 in the corner that got us going though and after Rick hit another, we were up by one and hit enough free-throws to win 69-67. I scored twenty which was pretty cool because I wasn’t much of a factor last year in state. So we were headed to the quarterfinals to play against Desert Christian, who got the big upset on Northwest Christian. We were all set to play NWCC but then they had to go on and lose so we ended up playing a team we knew nothing about but it shouldn’t have mattered.

So Saturday we were going up against big bad Desert Christian. We went to Boulder Creek again and watched the girls beat Morenci in a squeaker so the pressure was on us to win because they win. Unfortunately we didn’t come through. We came out well and we went back and forth with Desert Christian but once we started to miss shots and they kept doing what they were doing, I dunno, maybe the guys got razzled or something. Still at the end of the first quarter we were down by six and I thought it would be a pretty good game. Too bad it wasn’t so. They out executed us for the majority of the game, methodically running their offense for like a minute at a time and then getting a great shot. They did well to execute and our shots weren’t falling. I got a lot of attention from their coach so that was cool but I only ended up with ten points in my last game but it was fun. We had a run going on at one time and had cut the lead to seven on like a 8-0 run but then Jordan fouled a guy for an and-1 and then he slammed the ball and we got a T. They hit all three free throws and then scored on their possession so just like that we were down 14 again. That pretty much killed us. We weren’t really close ever again but it was still fun to play. We ended up losing 65-47 and that’s too bad. At the end of the game I tried to dunk it after the buzzer sounded. the ball went in and I got the rim but it wasn’t a dunk. It was fun to try. I wished them good luck and stuff and then we headed into the locker room. It was really weird because it was my last High School game and that was crazy. After the game Coach talked to us about how we had a good season and even though we didn’t win, we shouldn’t let that blind us to the great year we had. He also talked about how it hurt to lose because we believed that we could win State this year. I think we could’ve but we didn’t execute well enough to get past the quarters. Ah well, it was a bunch of fun while it lasted and we ended up as one of the best eight teams in the State because we were one of the last eight teams left. It was a fun year and I did well. Too bad I didn’t get to the big one. Plus Desert Christian ended up being Runner-Up, losing to Valley Christian in the Championship 63-38, so we lost the the #2 team. We were in the Elite Eight in the State and ended up 26-7 so it was a pretty god year. I think I averaged 15 points on the season, I dunno, hopefully we’ll get stats. Well it was a fun year, too bad it’s over. Ah well, on to Church Basketball!

Matthew Freeman has risen through the ranks to become one of the premier kids in Camp Verde. Ain't that sweet. Isn't that great!?!

  1. That’s too bad. But, that is a pretty impressive record, I must say. A lot better than the teams we had when I was in High School.
I’d like to see incontrovertible video evidence of this alleged almost-dunk…
